With energy costs skyrocketing, companies are looking for ways to optimize energy usage and cut costs, but maintain production output. Companies now capture details of energy use, such as peak and non-peak use and type of fuel used— natural gas, steam, coal, etc. There are different programs such as Energy Star that companies are using for guidance and reporting.

The information comes from different sources—utility bills and meters—which of course are managed by different departments. You need to be able to set usage and cost savings goals, track your progress and benchmark the current state of your energy performance. You should be able to compare energy usage across the company to find areas that have the highest probability for reduction.
